    Data processing and wearable systems for effective human monitoring

    The last few decades have seen an unrestrained diffusion of smart-integrated technologies that are extremely pervasive and customized based on humans’ environments and habits. Wearable and mobile technologies such as smartphones, smartwatches, lightweight sensors, textile-based support systems, flexible displays, and micro-cameras are now supplied with a significant amount of computational power, low-energy wireless communication, long-life battery, and large-memory storage that make them a valid platform for monitoring the everyday life of humans [1]. In this context, a large variety of new sensors are being developed to equip such well-established wearable and mobile technologies with the aim of continuous monitoring of physical behavior, emotional state, well-being, and health condition. Interestingly, the recently improved computational resources of mobile systems allow us to acquire, process, and communicate a large set of different information. Nevertheless, this confronts us with the chance and challenge of managing an impressive amount of heterogeneous data, including physiological signals, through new ad-hoc processing, synthesis methods, and big data analysis as well as ad-hoc experimental paradigms, system designs, and models

    Multiscale entropy analysis of heart rate variability in neonatal patients with and without seizures

    The complex physiological dynamics of neonatal seizures make their detection challenging. A timely diagnosis and treatment, especially in intensive care units, are essential for a better prognosis and the mitigation of possible adverse effects on the newborn’s neurodevelopment. In the literature, several electroencephalographic (EEG) studies have been proposed for a parametric characterization of seizures or their detection by artificial intelligence techniques. At the same time, other sources than EEG, such as electrocardiography, have been investigated to evaluate the possible impact of neonatal seizures on the cardio-regulatory system. Heart rate variability (HRV) analysis is attracting great interest as a valuable tool in newborns applications, especially where EEG technologies are not easily available. This study investigated whether multiscale HRV entropy indexes could detect abnormal heart rate dynamics in newborns with seizures, especially during ictal events. Furthermore, entropy measures were analyzed to discriminate between newborns with seizures and seizure-free ones. A cohort of 52 patients (33 with seizures) from the Helsinki University Hospital public dataset has been evaluated. Multiscale sample and fuzzy entropy showed significant differences between the two groups (p-value < 0.05, Bonferroni multiple-comparison post hoc correction). Moreover, interictal activity showed significant differences between seizure and seizure-free patients (Mann-Whitney Test: p-value < 0.05). Therefore, our findings suggest that HRV multiscale entropy analysis could be a valuable pre-screening tool for the timely detection of seizure events in newborns

    Defining design parameters and criteria for the avoidance of moisture-related problems within current Chilean buildings

    A preliminary assessment of the new Moisture Assessment Tool (MAT) developed by the Chilean Ministry of Housing and Urbanism (MINVU) was carried out for 36 Provinces along the 9 thermal zones defined for the Chilean territory. Calculations were conducted in accordance with ISO 13788 and the Chilean standard NCh 1973, complemented with the ADF moisture criteria and benchmarked with Passivhaus hygiene requirements. The fRsi values estimated by the MAT methods were successfully determined and found to agree with Passivhaus criteria for almost every thermal zone. This research provides theoretical insight to adjust climate-dependent design parameters and criteria to improve the methods and calculations for the avoidance of condensation and mould growth

    Peritoneal sarcoidosis: an unusual presentation and a brief review of the literature

    Peritoneal involvement continues to be a rare manifestation of sarcoidosis: its involvement is not always isolated and sarcoid granulomas are also found elsewhere. Peritoneal diseases tend to have an increased incidence in women. Peritoneal involvement presents as ascites, as peritoneal thickening and multiple soft tissue nodules, and can often simulate peritoneal carcinomatosis. We describe a case of a man presenting abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and a clinical picture of intestinal obstruction, with peritoneal sarcoidosis and abdominal findings suggesting peritoneal carcinomatosis. The diagnosis of sarcoidosis was confirmed by biopsy of the peritoneum during surgical laparotomy. Peritoneal involvement is a rare manifestation of sarcoidosis (less than 30 cases described in English medical literature) : to our knowledge this is the first reported case of the disease presenting with an acute abdominal obstruction treated with surgery

    Directing diarrhoeal disease research towards disease-burden reduction

    Despite gains in controlling mortality relating to diarrhoeal disease, the burden of disease remains unacceptably high. To refocus health research to target disease-burden reduction as the goal of research in child health, the Child Health and Nutrition Research Initiative developed a systematic strategy to rank health research options. This priority-setting exercise included listing of 46 competitive research options in diarrhoeal disease and their critical and quantitative appraisal by 10 experts based on five criteria for research that reflect the ability of the research to be translated into interventions and achieved disease-burden reduction. These criteria included the answerability of the research questions, the efficacy and effectiveness of the intervention resulting from the research, the maximal potential for disease-burden reduction of the interventions derived from the research, the affordability, deliverability, and sustainability of the intervention supported by the research, and the overall effect of the research-derived intervention on equity. Experts scored each research option independently to delineate the best investments for diarrhoeal disease control in the developing world to reduce the burden of disease by 2015. Priority scores obtained for health policy and systems research obtained eight of the top 10 rankings in overall scores, indicating that current investments in health research are significantly different from those estimated to be the most effective in reducing the global burden of diarrhoeal disease by 2015

    Can a Humanoid Face be Expressive? A Psychophysiological Investigation

    Non-verbal signals expressed through body language play a crucial role in multi-modal human communication during social relations. Indeed, in all cultures, facial expressions are the most universal and direct signs to express innate emotional cues. A human face conveys important information in social interactions and helps us to better understand our social partners and establish empathic links. Latest researches show that humanoid and social robots are becoming increasingly similar to humans, both esthetically and expressively. However, their visual expressiveness is a crucial issue that must be improved to make these robots more realistic and intuitively perceivable by humans as not different from them. This study concerns the capability of a humanoid robot to exhibit emotions through facial expressions. More specifically, emotional signs performed by a humanoid robot have been compared with corresponding human facial expressions in terms of recognition rate and response time. The set of stimuli included standardized human expressions taken from an Ekman-based database and the same facial expressions performed by the robot. Furthermore, participants’ psychophysiological responses have been explored to investigate whether there could be differences induced by interpreting robot or human emotional stimuli. Preliminary results show a trend to better recognize expressions performed by the robot than 2D photos or 3D models. Moreover, no significant differences in the subjects’ psychophysiological state have been found during the discrimination of facial expressions performed by the robot in comparison with the same task performed with 2D photos and 3D models

    Instantaneous Assessment of Hedonic Olfactory Perception using Heartbeat Nonlinear Dynamics: A Preliminary Study

    Emotional perception to hedonic olfactory stimuli is un- der direct control of the limbic system, whose dynam- ics is known to affect autonomic nervous system activity on cardiovascular control. Mainly due to methodologi- cal limitations, previous investigations failed to uncover specific trends in heartbeat dynamics between ultra short- time (i.e., lasting < 10s), pleasant and unpleasant olfac- tory stimuli. To this extent, in this study we computed in- stantaneous estimates from heartbeat series gathered from 32 healthy subjects (age: 26±2; 16M) undergoing hedo- nic olfactory elicitation. Each subject exhibited a simi- lar olfactory perception threshold, and scored five 5s stim- uli in terms of arousal and valence level using the self- assessment manikin test. We analyzed the heartbeat series using our recently proposed inhomogeneous point-process nonlinear framework, obtaining instantaneous estimates defined in the time (mean and standard deviation), fre- quency (power in the LF and HF bands, as well as LF/HF ratio), and nonlinear/complexity (bispectra, sample and approximate entropy, and Lyapunov exponent) domains. A feature set comprising average estimates within the 5s win- dows was taken as an input of a K-Nearest Neighborhood classification algorithm, whose cross-validation relied on a leave-one-subject-out procedure. Results demonstrate that our framework allows to finely characterize affective olfactory elicitation with an average recognition accuracy of 71.88%. Feature selection highlighted that the most dis- criminating power was contributed by instantaneous LF power, instantaneous Lyapunov exponents, and instanta- neous approximate entropy

    Linear and non linear measures of pupil size as a function of hypnotizability

    Higher arousal and cortical excitability have been observed in high hypnotizable individuals (highs) with respect to low hypnotizables (lows), which may be due to differences in the activation of ascending activating systems. The present study investigated the possible hypnotizability-related difference in the cortical noradrenergic tone sustained by the activity of the Locus Coeruleus which is strongly related to pupil size. This was measured during relaxation in three groups of participants—highs (N = 15), lows (N = 15) and medium hypnotizable individuals (mediums, N = 11)—in the time and frequency domains and through the Recurrence Quantification Analysis. ECG and Skin Conductace (SC) were monitored to extract autonomic indices of relaxation (heart interbeats intervals, parasympathetic component of heart rate variability (RMSSD) and tonic SC (MeanTonicSC). Most variables indicated that participants relaxed throughout the session. Pupil features did not show significant differences between highs, mediums and lows, except for the spectral Band Median Frequency which was higher in mediums than in lows and highs at the beginning, but not at the end of the session.Thus, the present findings of pupil size cannot account for the differences in arousal and motor cortex excitability observed between highs and lows in resting conditions
